Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Verified for Steam Deck; Custom Consoles Announced

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is fully verified for the Steam Deck ahead of its PC release on January 23, 2025. This announcement ensures compatibility and optimized performance for the handheld gaming platform. According to Director Naoki Hamaguchi, achieving this status required collaboration with the development team to meet Valve's requirements, with the aim of providing players with a smooth experience on the device.

To mark the occasion, Square Enix unveiled three custom Steam Deck OLED units featuring a Chocobo-inspired design. These devices are decorated with yellow fur, feathers, and a beak to resemble the iconic creature from the series. Although designed for promotional purposes, Square Enix has teased an upcoming giveaway or competition that will offer a chance to win one of these unique consoles. While the design is unconventional, steps were taken to maintain functionality, such as keeping the fan intake clear to avoid overheating.

The announcement of Steam Deck verification has also led to speculation about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth arriving on the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2. Reports suggest the game could launch on the platform in 2026, following the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the same system this year. For now, fans of the series can prepare to play the PC version of Rebirth later this month, with full Steam Deck support guaranteed at launch.
