Tencent and Square Enix Collaborate on Mobile Version of Final Fantasy XIV for Chinese Market

Tencent and Square Enix are reportedly working together on a mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV, a popular MMORPG with a long-standing presence on PC and console platforms. The project is currently aimed at the Chinese market, as confirmed by a recent report from Niko Partners, a research firm specializing in the Asian gaming industry. The report highlights a list of games that have received approval from the Chinese government, with the mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV being among them.

According to Niko Partners' director of research, Daniel Ahmad, the mobile game is expected to function as a standalone MMORPG, separate from the existing PC version of Final Fantasy XIV. However, Ahmad notes that this assumption is largely based on industry discussions rather than official statements from the companies involved. The game's development appears to be nearing completion, but details about the project remain limited, with no confirmation on whether it will be released outside of China.

The potential for a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV reflects the growing trend of adapting established MMORPGs for mobile platforms, particularly in the Chinese market. As the development progresses, industry observers are likely to keep a close watch on any official announcements from Tencent and Square Enix regarding the game's release plans and features. For now, the focus remains on the Chinese audience, with further information anticipated in the coming months.
